POKER RUN 2008

16/17 February 2008

Saturday started fine but soon went to the dogs but we still had over 80 people turn up for the poker run. When there is a party on it is hard to discourage a Ulyssian from attending. Unfortunately due to the rain the routs had to be altered slightly especially after a member had a sliding experience with a railway line. She is a strong soul and after looking after her bike she continued her run as pillion. A great night was had by all at the Country life Hotel at Kin Kin.

While we were at the hotel a very special event was witnessed by every one there. A group of tough old bike riders showed just how generous they can be to those in less fortunate circumstances.

On the Redcliffe Poker run I met a gentleman named Macca with a heart of gold. He donated some items for a raffle and requested that the money go to a good cause. The Publican, Ian, of the Country Life Hotel, Kin Kin also threw in some items for the raffle. We were not sure just what would meet Macca's criteria of a good cause but we were sure that something would come to us. While the tickets were being sold we heard of local 5 year old boy called Beau who had leukemia and his parents who needed some help.

To cut a long story short the raffle raised $200 which was presented to Beau's sister. She then rang Mum in tears and told her what happened. Mum and Dad brought Beau down to meet us. When we heard he was coming down it was proposed that we do a quick whip around for the odd gold coin or two to boost the $200.

Beau's story touched all those big tough bike riders and the whip around raised another $440. When I went to make the presentation to Beau's parents I found that I had a tear in my eye and found it hard to speak as the generosity of this group of Ulyssians overwhelmed me. There appeared to be few tears on the faces of those around me as we met Beau. It made me damn proud to be a member of a club that can rally to help someone they didn't know till 1 hour before hand.

To Macca, Tony (Manager of the Country Life Hotel) and all those members who were there I would like to say a heartfelt thank you for your generosity and humanity. The support shown by you made an ordinary old poker run a real special event which will stay with me as a very cherished memory. Thanks guys & girls you are the people who make this club such a fantastic experience.
